The Dreams & Nightmares Case is the case the community built. Valve ran a Workshop contest in 2021, reviewed more than 15,000 entries and picked 17 weapon finishes from 23 artists, 14 of them first-time contributors. Each winning entry earned $100,000 from a prize pool that grew from $1 million to $1.7 million. The case launched in January 2022 with the Gamma knives from Operation Riptide as its gold items.
It is still in the weekly drop pool, so it costs $0.99 on 22 October 2026, or $3.48 to open with a $2.49 key. Here is what is inside and what it returns.

The Butterfly decides everything. On average a Butterfly from this case is worth about $857, against $120 for a Falchion, $109 for a Huntsman, $100 for a Bowie and $59 for Shadow Daggers. The Gamma Doppler prices are for common phases; an Emerald costs far more, as our Doppler phase guide explains.

That is about 40% of the $3.48 cost, 33rd of 42 in our case expected value ranking. The knife slot is 47% of the value, the highest share of any current drop-pool case, and most of that comes from the one-in-1,923 Butterfly. Take the knives out and an opening is worth only about $0.74.
That makes the Dreams & Nightmares Case a high-variance case: most openings return a five-cent blue, and the average is held up by a rare Butterfly.
Dreams & Nightmares or Operation Riptide?
The Operation Riptide Case has exactly the same 30 knives. But it no longer drops, so it costs $6.92, making an opening $9.41. For the same knife chance the Dreams & Nightmares Case is the far cheaper ticket.
