Most CS2 cases cost less than a key. A handful cost more than a new game. We pulled the lowest listed price of every case in our database on 13 October 2026 (from Skinport, Pricempire and market.csgo.com) to see which are the most expensive, why, and what happens if you actually open one.
The 13 most expensive cases
| Case | First released | Price |
|---|---|---|
| CS:GO Weapon Case | 2013 | $102.86 |
| Operation Bravo Case | 2013 | $52.73 |
| eSports 2013 Case | 2013 | $41.54 |
| Operation Hydra Case | 2017 | $26.27 |
| CS:GO Weapon Case 2 | 2013 | $18.46 |
| CS:GO Weapon Case 3 | 2014 | $12.20 |
| eSports 2013 Winter Case | 2013 | $10.71 |
| eSports 2014 Summer Case | 2014 | $10.31 |
| Winter Offensive Weapon Case | 2013 | $9.00 |
| Glove Case | 2016 | $8.96 |
| Operation Breakout Weapon Case | 2014 | $7.32 |
| Operation Riptide Case | 2021 | $7.14 |
| Huntsman Weapon Case | 2014 | $7.07 |
Nine of the thirteen come from 2013 and 2014, the first two years of CS:GO. The rest are operation cases and the Glove Case.
The cheapest cases
At the other end are the cases that drop every week:
| Case | Price |
|---|---|
| Kilowatt Case | $0.11 |
| Revolution Case | $0.18 |
| Recoil Case | $0.24 |
| Snakebite Case | $0.32 |
| Fracture Case | $0.39 |
| Clutch Case | $0.43 |
The gap between the most and the least expensive case is almost 1,000 times.
Why old cases cost so much
They stopped dropping. Only the cases in the current weekly drop pool are still produced. Every old case that gets opened is gone for good, so the supply only goes down. Our weekly drop guide lists the cases that still drop.
Their skins are scarce too. In the CS:GO Weapon Case even the blue Mil-Spec tier is worth about $10.51 per opening, because those skins have not been made in years. Buyers pay for the chance at old skins nobody can unbox anymore.
Collectors hold them. For the oldest cases, part of the price is the case itself as a collectible. The original CS:GO Weapon Case shipped with the Arms Deal update in 2013, which gives it a value of its own.
What happens if you open one
Opening a collector case turns a scarce item into a random skin, and on average that loses a lot of value. From our case expected value ranking, with the case price plus a $2.49 key:
| Case | Cost to open | Expected value | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| CS:GO Weapon Case | $105.35 | $32.74 | 31.1% |
| Operation Bravo Case | $55.22 | $16.44 | 29.8% |
| eSports 2013 Case | $44.03 | $13.23 | 30.0% |
| Operation Hydra Case | $28.76 | $16.11 | 56.0% |
| CS:GO Weapon Case 3 | $14.69 | $10.03 | 68.3% |
The three most expensive cases are among the worst cases in the game to open, at around 30%. Some mid-priced old cases do better: the CS:GO Weapon Case 3 returns 68.3%, the best of all 42 cases, because its skins are worth a lot compared with its $12.20 case price.
The knives are not the reason either. Eleven older cases, including all of the oldest ones, share the same five original knives (Bayonet, Flip, Gut, Karambit and M9 Bayonet) with classic finishes, and at a 0.26% drop chance they add only about $0.82 to an average opening.
Prices move
Old case prices can move a lot in either direction, and the knife trade-up update of October 2025 showed how fast the whole skin market can shift. These numbers are a snapshot from 13 October 2026. Every case page in our case simulator shows the current price, the cost to open and the expected value, updated daily, and you can open any of these cases there for free.
